A heavy bag of wall filling plus all the equipment just to fill a whole or seal one crack? fillær has an all-in-one solution contained in a disposable carton.
It contains 330g of wall filler, enough to fill about 10 holes. It features ingenious perforations which converts the packaging into a bowl-shaped container with an ergonomic grip, plus a handy spatula to use for spreading. The dry filling can be mixed with water in the packaging, which is made from 300gsm carton. The slant incorporated in the spatula makes it easy to scrape off excess material. „fillær“ is made exclusively from cartonboard without any plastic, which enables an eco-friendly disposal. One purchase for a sustainable one-off filling job!
— A packaging project for the ProCarton Young Designers Award 2021 as one of the finalists.
The whole journey of the packaging began by researching the current status on the market. Packaging can have potential to support the product in it so that was the ultimate goal.
As students, we know the scenario of buying (mostly too much) wall filling and all the other materials to simply fill in some holes. And because that creates a lot of waste, we saw and seized the potential for a more convenient and sustainable packaging.
It was quite challenging to only use carton board but also allowing water to be mixed with the content. In order to ensure a highly functional packaging, we tested different carton boards.
The ergonomic shape sits comfortably in the user's hand. Furthermore, the whole operation is designed to be intuitive by showing the user where to push in and cut through a smart perforation.
After lots of prototyping and testing, the final cutting sheet could be cut precisely with the help of a laser cutter.
With this new packaging solution, we entered the ProCarton Young Designers Award 2021 and made it to the shortlist as top finalists. It also got featured in the packaging journal (see down below) in the category as young designers.
